The operetta The Merry Widow by Franz Lehár tells the story of the wealthy widow Hanna Glawari, who is surrounded by admirers at a reception hosted by Baron Mirko Zeta. To keep her fortune within the small country of Pontevedro, Count Danilo Danilowitsch is encouraged to marry her. Although they love each other, Danilo fears that his intentions might be seen as mere greed for her money. At the same time, romantic complications between Valencienne and Camille de Rosillon create further misunderstandings and jealousy. In the end, Hanna and Danilo finally confess their love. Premiered in 1905, the operetta quickly became an international success and a milestone in operetta history.
