Franz Kafka grappled with his Jewish identity throughout his life, feeling alienated by religious rituals yet fascinated by Yiddish theater, which he encountered in 1911 and which shaped his writing. Opera director Barrie Kosky stages Kafka's The Trial and other texts in German, Yiddish, and Hebrew—with German surtitles and music—to explore this theme. Kosky, former intendant of the Komische Oper Berlin, continues his collaboration with the Berliner Ensemble after his successful Threepenny Opera.
